On AIX 2.00/05 :

root [43] gSystem.ExpandPathName("~")

root [45] gSystem.ExpandPathName("~")
(char* 0x204b99d8)""
root [46] gSystem.ExpandPathName("~")
(char* 0x204b99e8)""
root [47] gSystem.ExpandPathName("~")
(char* 0x204b99f8)""
root [48] gSystem.ExpandPathName("~")
(char* 0x204b9a48)"/afs/in2p3.fr/home/a/aphecetc"

i.e, sometimes ExpandPathName does the job, sometimes not. 
Can someone reproduce this ? Or is this local ?
