For the record, I was missing something easy and obvious.  The problem was
conflicts between stdafx.h and TGXW.h which require a few modifications of
standard AppWizard compile options to overcome. 

Andrew Haas's excellent site at:
http://glast.phys.washington.edu/~haas/windows%20introduction.html

contains lots of useful information for mixing MFC and ROOT.  Perhaps it
should be listed in the tutorial or Howto section on the main ROOT web
site.
