If I understaood you right what you are asking about is called in
ROOT "picking object" and explained at the page:

           http://root.cern.ch/root/HowtoPick.html

You may apply the ROOT Web site "Search Engine" to find out
further information on this issue.

For example if you will try keyword "ExecuteEvent" you may find the
useful article

"http://root.cern.ch/cgi-bin/print_hit_bold.pl/root/roottalk/roottalk97 /0724.html?ExecuteEvent#first_hit

as well.

From another hand there is some "short" way to figure out which object
has been selected by mouse within some TPad object.
    The method "GetSelected"

   (see:http://root.cern.ch/root/html/TPad.html#TPad:GetSelected)

may help you too.

  Hope this helps,
                                   Valery
