Valery, Sorry for the confusion. I am running straight Win NT 4.0/ SP4 with Visual C++ 6.0 service pack 2 installed. The "cat" command is just a force of habit. I have the Microsoft NT resource kit installed, which includes posix command-line tools (cat, grep, etc.). However, this should not change things. The previous version of Root that I had installed (2.20, I forget which build) worked fine in this configuration. It is a help to know that the bug seems to be dependent on the configuration of the specific machine. I am a bit frustrated that there is no way for me to build root on my system, or else I could run it under a debugger and see where the problem comes in. (Do you know if Rene and friends plan ever to release a makefile for NT?). Do you know if there is a debugging facility within Root/CInt that would allow me to debug the initialization process? For what it's worth, if I give the command-line "root h.C", I can inspect the command line with gROOT.GetApplication()->Argc(1), which returns "h.C". However, I don't know what Root is doing with this argument.
