Hello, I recompiled root on a SuSE 5.3 system that was upgraded to a 6.0 system with the suse-update feature. I use the gcc, the Makefile I started from was Makefile.linux. I had to make some changes to the Makefile, which I include as an attachment. With these changes, compilation was successfull.
