Hi,
  If netscape is the problem try starting it with:

netscape -install

this forces netscape to install it's own colormap.  Once you do this
root seems to work fine, and, isn't slow plotting.  Of course, the
screen swaps all your colors around when you give netscape focus so
it's very ugly, but...
