Hi, libstdc++ is not the problem with failure to compile, although it was a problem for the binary kit. I have libstdc++.so.2.8.0 (which is STANDARD on RedHat 5.2). Apparently since the ROOT team is using a more recent version of egcs than is standard on RH 5.2, also a new libstdc++ is needed. The ROOT team should not advertise that binary kit as being appropriate for RH 5.2. It is only appropriate for a *modified* RH 5.2 system. I have also in the meantime tried the Makefile->Makefile.linux solution which worked even less well.
