Hi Michael, I've encountered that same problem once but unfortunately I forgot the details of how I solved it. Anyway, make sure you have the right ROOT distribution suited to your system. Also, you could try Dr. Langston's Autoconfed version of ROOT (ftp://ftp.slac.stanford.edu/users/langston/root/). The autoconfed version could be very convenient.
