I do as follows:

TGTextEntry * fTeRunNr;
TGTextBuffer * fTbRunNr;  // belongs to TextEntry fTeRunNr
...
   ostrstream buf;
   buf << setfill('0');
   buf << setw(3) << irun;
   fTbRunNr->Clear();
   fTbRunNr->AddText(0,buf.str());
   buf.rdbuf()->freeze(0);
   gClient->NeedRedraw(fTeRunNr);
