Hello Hans,
We have examples illustrating how to clone a TTree. See:
 $ROOTSYS/tutorials/copytree.C
 $ROOTSYS/tutorials/copytree2.C
 $ROOTSYS/test/stress.cxx (look at stress15)

However, I agree that it is a good idea to provide a function where one
can specify a selection formula. I will implement it.
