Hi Clark,
the problem was discovered and  fixed just a day after 4.00.08 was released.
If you are using GNOME do not use sawfish windows manager  or switch to KDE. 
Check correspondent  mail exchage at http://root.cern.ch/root/roottalk/roottalk04/2500.html
You can also use New, version 4.01/01 .
