My 2 cents...

not a very well known feature of ghostview: it reads PDF document

Yet, pdf's are difficult to EDIT on Unix system (would not know
how to, without bying some licence).
Latex can be edited by all systems (only needs one text editor).
Lyx exports in latex format and latex can be converted to lyx format
with latex2lyx, so it is (almost) the same.

on my system, I see the following binaries:

latex2html latex2rtf latex2lyx latex
dvips dvipdf
...and the gs suite:
ps2ascii ps2epsi ps2gif ps2pdf ps2ps
pdf2dsc(?) pdf2ps

Also, I see TLatex and TPostScript classes in ROOT,
but no TPDF :-)

Don't know about SGML, but it seems to be there too:

sgml2html sgml2latex sgml2rtf sgml2xml sgmlnorm sgmlsasp
sgml2info sgml2lyx sgml2txt sgmlcheck sgmlpre sgmlspl
