To get superscript _before_ a symbol, create an empty dummy symbol
just before, and suberscript that one. That is
{}^6He
This also goes in normal LaTeX/TeX i.e.:
... the nucleus ${}^6He$ has a mass of $\sim 6GeV$ ...
If the symbol you want to put a pre-superscript on is higher then
usual, you proberly need something like "amsmath.sty", but that's in
pure LaTeX, and really isn't the issue here. I jus thought I mention
it.
