John, I did not have any problems when installing root 2.25 using gcc 2.8.1 but I was using solarisgcc architecture. One problem with this version of gcc is that crashes several times with internal compiler errors when I try to use -O option. When I use -g instead everything goes fine. You may try to add root/bin to your PATH and root/lib to your LD_LIBRARY_PATH before proceeding with installation. Michal
