Thanks Valeri Fine and Rene Brun, I really appreciate your prompt response. Actually, I'm a graduate student and just starting my work in Exp. HEP. So I'm not very experienced in many things. All I did was, installed root on my home PC and then I took the User Guide (v0.7.2) and started trying the simple things given in the chapter 2 (Getting started). And the very first example given on page 14 didn't work! But after including the "iostream.h" (as mentioned by Valeri) it worked. The "gROOT" still gives me the same error. I guess, to make it work, I need to include some other header file which I don't know yet. Or probably some thing is missing from the installation which includes these from the beginning. (I don't even get the image logo "the splash sceen" on startup.) Unfortunately, I don't have 'gmake' command available to me on my home PC. So I still have to figure out how to get that. By the way, could you please tell me what is the .rootrc file. I don't have it in my installation but I see reference to this file in the User Guide. Thanks again for your help. Imran Younus SLAC
