Hi Chris,

  the problem turns out to be that the iostream from 2.95.3 does not 
interoperate with the iostream from 2.96 (since they both have the same
name the one from 2.96 is used, also for code compiled with 2.95).

I'll also provide binaries for 2.96 on RH7.1.
