Matrox G400 is a very good (and cheap) choice. I myself has a Matrox
G200 and I'm quite happy with that.

I got hardware acceleration to work on my machine

 * Debian GNU/Linux 2.2r3 box
 * Linux kernel 2.2.17 SMP (I'm not sure about the revision, but
   something like that)
 * XFree 3.3.6 (yes, not 4.0.1)
 * Utah GL libraries and GLX (see http://utah-glx.sourceforge.net).
 * Matrox G200

On that machine, I can manipulate the NA49 geometry (as in the
tutorials) in realtime :-) Cool! This worked out of the box by the
way.

However,  trying the configuration:

 * Redhat 6.2
 * Linux kernel 2.2.16
 * XFree 3.3.6
 * Utah GL libraries and GLX
 * Matrox G400

does not work at all i.e., GL rendering is not working (causes the X
server to crash in fact). Hmm ... maybe something wrong with the
Redhat build, who knows.

Yours,
