Heh. Hold on a minute, big guy!  Don't go volunteering me for this!! 
<grin>.  Anyways, this is essentially what Bertrand is doing for the
Windows port, right?  At Root2001 I remembered he mentioned something
about wanting to modify Gdk a little.  If that could be avoided, then
wouldn't we get a cross platform TGdk for free?

As for me, in the short term I am more interested in coding directly
to Gtk-- but still retaining the ROOT TCanvas/TPad for event displays
and histograms.  So the thing I would like to do is continue working
on my Gtk-- copy of QtROOT.  Whether I can do this or not depends on
some internal MINOS decisions, about which I won't sully this ML.

As for your original post, I enjoyed hearing about ROOT's history and
the long term perspective you are working from.  It is something I
didn't, and probably still don't, fully appreciate.
