Dear Jim, I have 'installed' various ROOT versions on win2k systems without any problem by doing the following : 1) Make sure to have on your main drive (normally c:\) a file autoexec.bat containing the lines as indicated on the ROOT web pages. The easiest is to make c:\root the basic directory for your ROOT installation. 2) Take the ROOT binary tar.gz file from the ROOT download area and unzip it into this c:\root directory. 3) Shut down your computer and restart it again. 4) Now you should be able to run ROOT without any problem by just opening an MS-Dos box and typing root into it. 5) You can tailor your ROOT look and feel by for instance making a directory c:\jim and calling that your HOME directory (in autoexec.bat). In your home directory you can enter files .rootrc rootlogon.C rootalias.C and rootlogoff.C. In your .rootrc file you must then set the DynamicPath and MacroPath such that it includes .;$(HOME) to specify a search for files in your current working directory and your HOME directory. In case you startup ROOT (see 4) above) from some directory, it will use the above files from your HOME directory as default unless you have for instance in your current directory also a rootlogon.C. In that case it will use this file from your current directory. Hope this will help you out.
