Hi Anton,

I feel really sorry for answering your last night question only now.
I am currently supposed to take some days of rest in the South of France.

So far, the ROOT project has not been "oficially" supported by CERN.
A new structure is being set up where ROOT will be "officially" supported.
We are expecting to see a very strong consolidation of the project
in terms of resources (manpower in particular). These are very good news.
Concerning Windows support, the official policy at CERN was (is) to
not give any support for Windows for Physics applications. Windows is
supported for the administrative tasks and also for some engineering
applications. The decision was taken about 2 years ago to support
mainly Linux + another Unix system.
We have provided some support for Windows (despite the fact that Fons
or myself are not Windows experts at all). Support, as you know,
has been originally provided by Valery, and still by Valery on a good will
basis. At my knowledge, only 2 or 3 experiments currently are using
Windows as an "official" platform.
It is clear to me, however, that independently of the political support,
a much stronger support should be given to the Windows platform.
The problem is that, it is not easy to get real Windows experts
as it is the case for Linux. I already mentioned several times this point
to this list, and I feel somehow, that ROOT Windows users should try
to cooperate to enhance this support.
One of the reasons why we could not provide a better support was due
to the difficulty to evolve the classes developed by Valery a few years
ago
in the mainstream of the GUI and graphics development. Valery did a great
job in developing these classes, but the maintenance requires a Windows
expert. This is the main reason why we believe that the approach we are
taking in basing the new developments on TVirtualX derivatives (GDK or Qt)
is the right one and the only one that can guarantee a smooth support
for the medium and long term.
We have been discussing with Valery following his recent development with
Qt.
We have agree to support this line once the full TVirtualX derivation TQT
will be ready. I understand from a recent exchange with Valery that this
is
imminent.
Once this interface is ready, I believe that the Windows maintenance will
become a bit easier and also the Windows version more robust and in phase
with the developments on Linux.
