Hi Wolfgang,

  on linux:
- copy /usr/share/magic to ~/.magic
- add to ~/.magic the lines:
  # ROOT file
  0       string          root            ROOT data file
- set in your .bash_profile:
  export MAGIC=~/.magic

and "file" will identify a ROOT file as such.
