Can I also endorse your suggestion? This would really avoid duplicating fonts just for ROOT.

PAIPIX ( is a linux live DVD remastered from KNOPPIX that includes ROOT and many other scientific and technical packages. The iso file is available form the machine above but I could try to copy it also to some computer at CERN if people are interested.
