Hi Mike,
It would be certainly possible to write a small C program checking
if a file is a valid ROOT file. This program will be a subset
of the current TFile constructor, TFile::Recover and some small other
functions.
Let me know if you write it, otherwise we will put this request
in the list of things to do in the medium/long term.
An other option would be to specify a TFile::Open option that does not
print an error message in case the file is a zombie.
