Sorry, but I am still seeing the problem with a ROOT that I have just built taking a fresh copy directly from CVS.

To repeat, my configuration is:-

  Scientific Linux SL release 3.0.8 with gcc version 3.2.3

I suspect it is the compiler switch that changed things. Are you sure you did your tests with 3.2.3? I saw the problem both at RAL and Oxford and it has since been reported by at least one site in the States, so I don't think it's something broken at a single site.
