Hi Kevin,
also on MacOS X Fink's gcc 4.2 version the libgfortranbegin is found in the gcc specific directories. I've fixed the ROOT makefile part of Linux to do the same as on MacOS X and it seems to link correctly with gfortran now. Take the svn trunk and try it.
