Hello Ole,

I am working in Fermi/LAT collaboration and often use FITS images in my analysis. From my experience, there is no standard way to process astronomical data in ROOT. But if you are familiar with python, I recommend you to use pyfits and PyROOT.

The biggest problem of ROOT in astronomical data handling is that we cannot plot histograms with inverted x-axis. As you know, we always use celestial and galactic coordinates and its values increases from right to left. Because of this limitation, we have to re-align pixel values in histograms manually and have to put customized TGaxis in x- axis by ourselves.

AstroROOT and other library may be your help, but there is not standard and community-accepted library ever.
