               thanks for help.
The steps I followed:

  1. http://www.cygwin.com/#beta-test downloaded and installed this version
  2. Downloaded ftp://root.cern.ch/root/root_v5.24.00.win32.vc90.debug.tar.gz and unzipped and un-tarred and did the http://www.muenster.de/~naumana/win32gcc.html and did add lines mentioned in root.sh export ROOTSYS=/cygdrive/c/root export PATH=$ROOTSYS/bin:$PATH

Then did "echo $ROOTSYS" and got the path back.

But after typing root in one of the cygwin xterms, Its stuck at "Enclose mutiple statements..." and then did not give me the final prompt. I do not know which "log file" you mentioned here.
