Hi Robert,

The standard distribution of packages like ruby include a full directory tree, such that it is easier to
migrate between different versions or easily set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH. The ROOT build system looks for standard places where ruby is typically found (see the configure and Makefile). The version 5.27/02 looks for versions like 1.8 or 1.9 and picks the most recent one. I can only encourage you to follow the standard process.
