Re: Bug fixed for Microsoft compiler

There were several questions from the ROOT Windows users how one
can upgrade his/her version of Microsoft developer tools (VC++
compiler is a part of that).

For instance

It is "Service Pack 3 for Microsoft Developer Studio v.5.0"

         http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/sp/vs97/kb.asp

(it is NOT service pack for Windows NT 4.0).

The "standard" place for "Service Packs" is

  http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/sp/default.asp

But one may find there "packs" for VC++ 6.0 ONLY.

However ROOT is still compiled with for VC+5.0 and Digital Visual
Fortran v.5.0.

(I'd like to mention switching to VC++ 6.0 does require switching
to Digital Visual Fortran v.6.0 too,
    see http://www.digital.com/fortran/
)

Below I am attaching some information on that from the "Developer
Studio Service Pack 3" README;

Note: By the way for our FORTRAN user I would advice to pick the
last Digital Visual Fortran v.5.0 update as follows:

        http://www.digital.com/fortran/dvf-update.html

        In http://root.cern.ch/root/roottalk/roottalk98/2298.html
Rene Brun mentioned that "It would be a real nightmare if
compilers on other platforms were featuring the same number
        of bugs!!"

But I didn't find the list of the "bugs" from the Digital

           http://www.digital.com/fortran/dvf/Relnotes-50D.txt

is less impressive that from Microsoft. I didn't see those
        from other companies though )

Finding More Information on Issues Resolved with This Service Pack

The Microsoft Knowledge Base contains articles that provide more
in-depth information about the Visual Studio issues that are fixed in
this Service Pack.

To locate these articles, go to

  http://support.microsoft.com/support/

and follow the instructions below to build a query.

To build a Visual Studio Service Pack query:

1. Choose a product. (In this case, click "Any Products.")
2. Click on more search options to get choices about how you will

contain VS97FixlistSP1 or VS97FixlistSP2, describe fixes that were
added in Service Pack 3.
Since Service Pack 3 includes all of the fixes in Service Pack 1 and
Service Pack 2, all of the articles describing the fixes in Service

Pack 1 will contain all three keywords: VS97FixlistSP1,
VS97FixlistSP2, and VS97FixlistSP3.

Articles describing fixes in Service Pack 2 will contain the
VS97FixlistSP1 and VS97FixlistSP2 keywords. To find just those new
items that were fixed in Service Pack 3, search for:
